How to find a Couples Counsellor in Calgary

If you're looking for Couples Counselling in Calgary, you're not alone.

Are you and your partner struggling to communicate effectively? Do you feel like you're stuck in the same arguments and unable to move forward? If so, couple counseling may be able to help. However, finding a Couples Counsellor in Calgary can be overwhelming, especially if you're not sure where to start. Here are some steps to help you find a qualified couple counsellor in Calgary.

Step 1 - recognizing that you need help. You try and you try, and you are still fighting about the same thing over and over again, and it’s exhausting; you feel more like roommates than lovers; or maybe one of you brought up the “D” word - divorce. And yet, you love each other, you want to be together, you want to see if things could improve - you decided to look for help.

That’s the hardest step.

Step 2 - Do your research. Start by doing some research to find different Couples Counsellors in Calgary. You can begin by searching online, asking friends and family members for recommendations, or checking with your health insurance provider.

Step 3 - Logistics

When choosing a Couples Counsellor, consider yours and their availability and location. You want to make sure that you can schedule appointments at a time that works for both you and your partner. Some Couples Counsellors will only work during day hours, some have evening and weekends availability.

Are you looking for online or in person therapy? If in person, how far are you willing to drive - so look at the Counsellor’s location. Having worked through Covid I can confidently say that online couples therapy works just as well as in person. I also understand that so many of us are sick and tired of Zoom calls and prefer to be there in person. Your reasons are your reasons, so look for a counsellor who offers what you re looking for.

Step 4 - Expertise

Make sure the Therapist has the experience and training in areas you need support with. Just like doctors, some counsellors are generalists, and some are specialists. First of all, make sure the therapist works with couples. Not all counsellors do. Not all have a lot of specialized training in this area, in fact many don't.

If there is anything about sex or intimacy that you want to address in counselling, make sure your therapist has extensive training as a sexologist or sex therapist. If you are looking for help recovering from an affair, make sure your counsellor has a lot of experience in this area.

Step 5 - Schedule your free consultation

Go through their website and then schedule a free consultation. Most counsellors offer a quick call, and some will offer a quick in person visit, ranging from 10-15 minutes, to half of an hour.

Schedule your call, and be prepared. If you only have 10 minutes, make sure you know what’s important to you.

Ask your quesions. Share a little bit about your situation. Make sure they get you. Make sure they worked with many couples in situations like yours. Make sure you feel good talking to this person, you feel listened to, understood, gotten.

Ask about their approach, and see if it resonates with you. If you listened to every podcast with Esther Perel, you might be relieved to find a counsellor who has training with her and offers a similar approach. Ask if there will be handouts and specific homework that you can work on.

We will explore this more in a future post, but for now I hope I’ve given you some ideas.
